Vietnamese sugar industry leads regional productivity for the first time
Vietnam introduced 23 new sugarcane strains, including 12 domestic hybrids and eight imported varieties
The Vietnamese sugar industry has achieved the highest productivity in the region, surpassing major producers like Thailand and Indonesia, reports Vietnam News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS. This accomplishment is attributed to advancements in mechanisation and the integration of new technologies in agriculture.
With a sugarcane yield of 6.79 tonnes per hectare during the 2023-2024 harvest season, Vietnam has outpaced its regional competitors. The widespread adoption of mechanised practices in soil preparation and harvesting—over 90 per cent mechanisation—has played a key role in this success. These innovations allow for better monitoring, risk management, and yield optimisation.
Additionally, Vietnam introduced 23 new sugarcane strains, including 12 domestic hybrids and eight imported varieties, which are being tested in diverse ecological zones to enhance crop resilience and productivity.
This progress has led to continuous growth in sugarcane production for four consecutive years, with output increasing by 166 per cent and sugar production rising by 161 per cent.
