Zimbabwe launches ambitious digital health initiative to transform healthcare delivery

Zimbabwe is spearheading a transformative digital health initiative aimed at enhancing healthcare access and efficiency through cutting-edge technology. At the heart of this effort is the Impilo electronic health records system, introduced by the Ministry of Health and Child Care to revolutionise data collection, patient management, and communication between healthcare providers and patients.

Speaking at a digital health stakeholders’ meeting in Harare, Minister of Health and Child Care Douglas Mombeshora emphasised that Impilo goes beyond mere technological integration. “Through these guiding frameworks, we are building Zimbabwe’s digital superhighway to health, a health system that anticipates and addresses challenges efficiently, the health system ensuring no one is left behind," he stated.

Frederick Shava, Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science, and Technology Development, underscored the critical role of integrating digital technologies across all levels of medical education. He noted the government's mission to prepare a skilled workforce under its "Education 5.0" policy, which prioritises innovation and practical learning. The Impilo system is expected to create a digital "superhighway" for Zimbabwe's healthcare, ensuring improved service delivery, modernised medical infrastructure, and inclusive access to care for citizens across the country.
