Patricia Villegas Marin, President of teleSUR, one of the largest agencies in Latin America: BRICS is hope

In an exclusive interview with TV BRICS, she spoke about teleSUR's plans for the future and the impact of BRICS co-operation in addressing the challenges of the Global South

Patricia Villegas Marin is a renowned Colombian journalist with a degree in Social Communication and Journalism, University of Valle (Universidad del Valle). At International Centre of Advanced Communication Studies for Latin America (CIESPAL), she specialised in the production of gender-sensitive digital radio and the design and production of educational television. Since 2005, she has held the positions of anchor and news director of teleSUR, being a special envoy in covering important regional news and interviewing well-known personalities.

Since January 2011, she has been President of teleSUR, strengthening the project as a multimedia project with global reach and influence. She has also lectured at academic events and participated in virtual forums on public communication and national information security.

In an exclusive interview with TV BRICS, he spoke about teleSUR's future plans and the impact of BRICS co-operation on the challenges of the Global South.

Earlier, at the award ceremony of the II National Award "Headliners of ESG Principles" held in St. Petersburg, teleSUR won in the category "Headliner among Sustainable Media" with its special project "Destination Green".

What are teleSUR's long-term perspectives and goals in terms of adhering to the ESG principles?

TeleSUR has adhered to these criteria since its inception. We produce content that, with a clear intention, impacts our users and allows them to reflect on the structural causes of environmental degradation. We are currently running a line of dissemination called "The Climate Crisis", which reflects the daily events related to these facts, but also points to a necessary understanding of the origins of a problem that is now endangering human life on the planet.

What are the future plans for teleSUR and the Destino Verde project after receiving the Headliners of the ESG Principles award?

We will continue our programme and are deeply grateful for the recognition of our collective producers of this content. We will continue to showcase these destinations and thereby add value to each ecosystem. Showcasing biodiversity in Latin America is one of our information stakes and we will be touring our region to this end.

How can BRICS co-operation affect the challenges of the Global South, such as the fight against inequality and poverty?

The BRICS countries are extremely important today, they are united by more organic and noble interests than other blocs of countries or experiences of multilateral co-operation. No real development is possible today without concern for the environment. Sharing the strengths of their members to create healthier economic chains, as well as implementing public policies for the common good and influencing the structural causes of the problems that generate inequality, is one of the most urgent tasks on which we pin our hopes.

What are the prospects for the development and expansion of BRICS in the coming decades?

A large number of countries are seeking to join the bloc, which in itself speaks to the great interest in participating in the birth of a new global social order. Multipolarity is more tangible and concrete today because of this bloc of unity. BRICS is the hope.
