At South Africa's AI summit, experts discuss regulation and opportunities for new technologies

One expert emphasised that AI has the potential to help people with disabilities

The National AI Summit in Johannesburg discussed the urgent need for AI regulation. The event raised the important issue of the need for an action plan to ensure the safe and responsible use of AI.

South African Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Mondli Gungubele emphasised that a key objective of working with artificial intelligence is to ensure that it always serves human interests.

"The biggest challenge we have on AI is to stay apace with it so that at all material times it serves the human what we call human purpose," said Mondli Gungubele.

The experts also discussed the potential of AI to solve complex problems, including the creation of assistive technologies for people with disabilities. Central University of Technology lecturer Paul Ntsinyi shared information on the development of a wheelchair capable of being controlled by speech commands, which could significantly improve mobility for people with limited mobility. This is reported by CCTV+, a partner of TV BRICS.

The summit thus emphasised the importance of advancing the regulation of artificial intelligence to ensure its safe and ethical use for the benefit of humanity.
