Belarus ready to join BRICS in addressing environmental and biological challenges

At the expanded session of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ryzhenkov announced Belarus’s willingness to contribute to coordinated BRICS mechanisms aimed at countering environmental and biological threats. This is reported by BelTA, a partner of TV BRICS.

Speaking during the thematic session on “Environment, COP-30, and Global Health”, he stated that Belarus is ready to share its experience and advanced technologies on climate and public health issues of global relevance. He emphasised that climate change mitigation and adaptation, along with environmental preservation, are national security priorities for Belarus.

The European country has already integrated Sustainable Development Goal 13 (“Climate Action”) into its strategic planning and implemented two national climate programmes. 

Some initiatives include sector-specific adaptation strategies for agriculture, forestry, and water management, as well as the commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. 

Belarus is also among the European leaders in wetland restoration, an initiative that provides critical ecosystem services. Looking ahead, the country is preparing a long-term low-emission development strategy until 2050.
