United Nations proclaims 2027–2036 as International Decade of Strengthening Peace for Future Generations

UN General Assembly Resolution sets priorities for international cooperation to strengthen social cohesion

The United Nations has officially proclaimed the period 2027–2036 as the International Decade of Strengthening Peace for Future Generations. The new global initiative, enshrined in a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, launches a ten-year framework for international cooperation aimed at expanding youth participation in decision-making and advancing sustainable development.

The presentation of the resolution, initiated by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, provided a platform for discussing practical mechanisms for implementing the Decade. These include a commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, as well as the provisions of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. The resolution places particular emphasis on expanding the participation of children and young people in public life, strengthening international cooperation, and implementing initiatives designed to foster mutual trust, social cohesion, and partnership.

As Davlatshoh Gulmahmadzoda, Ambassador of Tajikistan to the Russian Federation, noted, the President's initiative goes beyond formal declarations.

"The key and innovative aspect of this resolution is solidarity among nations for future generations. The Decade of Peace will serve as a logical continuation of the outcomes of the landmark Summit of the Future 2024 and the Pact for the Future adopted there. Tajikistan, which plays a leading role in addressing issues related to water resources, glacier preservation, and the climate agenda, also seeks to make its contribution to building a sustainable framework for peace for the future," he added.

The resolution also welcomes the contributions of States, leaders, and peoples to strengthening peace and national unity through inclusive political processes, confidence-building measures, and investment in social cohesion. These examples are recognised as a source of inspiration for present and future generations.

The principles of the resolution are closely aligned with the humanitarian agenda of BRICS, whose declaration places particular emphasis on strengthening mutual trust, promoting international cooperation, supporting sustainable development, and expanding humanitarian exchanges.

The resolution was adopted by consensus by all United Nations Member States, including the BRICS countries and partner states, demonstrating broad international unity around the values of cooperation, mutual respect, and responsibility towards future generations.
