China unveils new forest strategy to expand national tree cover by 2030

Five-year environmental roadmap combines reforestation, biodiversity conservation and green economic development to strengthen sustainable growth

China has introduced a new national strategy for forests and grasslands covering the period from 2026 to 2030, setting targets to expand forest coverage, restore ecosystems and strengthen the role of natural resources in sustainable economic development.

The roadmap forms part of the country's latest five-year development programme and outlines a long-term approach that integrates environmental protection with economic growth, rural development and climate resilience, as reported by Brasil de Fato, a partner of TV BRICS.

Under the new plan, China aims to increase national forest coverage to 25.8 per cent by 2030, while expanding forest reserves to 22.4 billion cubic metres. The strategy also supports the continued development of the forest and grassland economy, promoting sustainable industries linked to ecological resources and environmental stewardship.

Reforestation remains a central element of the programme. Over recent decades, China has implemented extensive tree-planting and land restoration projects that have significantly increased forest coverage, rising from approximately 12 per cent in the early 1980s to more than 25 per cent today. According to international assessments, the country has recorded one of the world's largest increases in forest area through sustained reforestation efforts.

The new policy places additional emphasis on biodiversity conservation. Authorities plan to expand protected areas, enhance national park development, improve wetland conservation and strengthen protection measures for 165 threatened species of wild plants and animals. The measures are intended to reinforce ecosystem resilience while preserving valuable natural habitats.

Alongside conservation objectives, the strategy encourages sustainable economic activities connected to forest resources. Initiatives including eco-tourism,  sustainable agriculture, medicinal plant cultivation and environmentally responsible forestry are expected to support regional development while maintaining ecological balance.
