China unveils near-zero-emission coal power breakthrough

New fuel cell technology could transform coal into a cleaner energy source while improving efficiency and reducing carbon output


Chinese researchers have introduced a new coal-based power generation technology that could significantly reduce carbon emissions, marking a potential shift in how one of the world’s most widely used fossil fuels is utilised, reports China Daily, a partner of TV BRICS.

A team led by a senior academic from Shenzhen has developed a zero-carbon-emission direct coal fuel cell (ZC-DCFC) system, designed to generate electricity without traditional combustion. Unlike conventional coal-fired power stations, which burn fuel and release substantial amounts of carbon dioxide, the proposed system eliminates combustion entirely. Experts believe that this approach could dramatically lower emissions while improving energy efficiency.

Coal continues to play a central role in global energy systems, despite ongoing efforts to transition towards cleaner alternatives. Existing technologies, including integrated gasification systems, typically achieve energy conversion rates of around 45 per cent and produce high levels of CO₂ emissions.

The research team has been working on the ZC-DCFC concept since 2018, achieving progress in advanced materials, fuel processing techniques and electrode design. These developments have enabled the system to operate more efficiently while maintaining low emissions.

The technology may also offer a solution for accessing deep underground coal reserves, which are becoming increasingly important as easily accessible deposits decline. By reimagining coal as a lower-emission energy source, the innovation could contribute to a more sustainable use of existing resources, the source stated.
