Brazil invests in sustainable data centres for AI development

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation has announced a massive US$87,6 million investment in a programme aimed at creating sustainable data centres for the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in the country. This is reported by the official website of the Brazilian Government.

The programme will focus on supporting projects that use renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass to power data centres, thereby reducing dependence on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions.

Data centres, as critical infrastructure for storing and processing the data needed for AI development, are often characterised by high energy consumption. Green data centres seek to minimise this impact by adopting sustainable technologies and practices.

The Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation plans to consult with experts, private sector and civil society representatives to define guidelines and criteria for project selection. The programme is expected to create a robust, sustainable and innovative AI ecosystem in Brazil, boosting economic growth and creating jobs.
