Chinese researchers discover new insect species
This discovery adds to the diversity of species in the region
A newly identified species of insect has been discovered in Guangdong Province, southern China. Officially named Eidoreus haizhuensis, the species was revealed during a mangrove conservation event on 16 February 2025, by researchers from the Guangdong Academy of Sciences. This is reported by CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS.
The new insect species, belonging to the order Coleoptera, was first identified as part of a comprehensive insect monitoring and investigation project that began in 2020. The research, led by the Institute of Zoology at the Guangdong Academy of Sciences, also involved the classification and identification of specimens within the Haizhu Wetland.
Eidoreus haizhuensis measures between 1.2 and 1.3 millimetres in length and has a reddish-brown, oval body that is convex on both its dorsal and ventral sides. Its legs and antennae are lighter in colour, adding to its distinct appearance.
This discovery adds to the diversity of species in the region, contributing valuable insights into ecological protection and biological evolution, experts claimed.
The wetland has been under continuous research and monitoring since 2012, with 903 insect species now documented, further underscoring its importance for preserving urban biodiversity.
