Egypt drives modernisation of sugarcane irrigation to increase crop yields

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly recently convened a meeting with key ministers to discuss the advancement of irrigation systems for sugarcane cultivation. The goal is to boost the yield of this strategic crop while significantly reducing water consumption, as reported by Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.

During the meeting, Madbouly highlighted the critical role of efficient irrigation in managing Egypt’s water resources and adapting to environmental challenges. He stressed that improving irrigation techniques is essential to ensuring agricultural output, supporting food security, and meeting domestic demand for sugarcane.

Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa El-Din Farouk, detailed the advantages of adopting modern irrigation technologies, such as drip irrigation and enhanced field irrigation. These methods can cut water use by up to 30 per cent, reduce fertiliser application, limit weed growth, lower costs, and ultimately increase productivity. 

The meeting included several senior officials. They agreed on the significant potential to expand water-saving agricultural practices, many of which are already favoured by farmers due to their affordability and ease of adoption. 

According to the source, this coordinated effort aims to promote more efficient and environmentally friendly sugarcane production across Egypt.
