Dubai’s green initiative provides 62,000 megawatt-hours to boost sustainable mobility
The initiative has enabled electric vehicles in the country to travel more than 310 million kilometres
The Green Charger Initiative, launched by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has become a cornerstone for accelerating the transition to sustainable mobility and consolidating Dubai’s position as one of the world’s leading cities in the green economy and smart infrastructure.
Since its launch in 2014, the initiative has achieved outstanding results: it has supplied over 62,000 megawatt-hours of electricity, enabling electric vehicles to travel more than 310 million kilometres, reflecting the growing uptake of this mode of transport in the emirate, according to Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS.
DEWA’s CEO, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, emphasised that the initiative embodies the organisation’s commitment to the leadership vision of transforming Dubai into a smart and sustainable city, integrating the energy and mobility sectors. To this end, an advanced and reliable charging infrastructure has been developed, which now comprises more than 2,223 charging points across the city, including Green Charger stations and authorised operators, with the aim of promoting the adoption of low-emission solutions and reducing the carbon footprint.
The network currently serves around 23,600 registered users and offers four main types of chargers. Furthermore, DEWA has implemented a digital ecosystem that allows residents and visitors to access the service without prior registration by scanning a QR code, thereby facilitating electric mobility for both local and international drivers and reinforcing Dubai’s role as a global hub for green mobility.
