Government of Brazil's Rio de Janeiro to convert 20 medical centres to clean energy

Authorities in Rio de Janeiro will convert 20 public health centres to clean energy. This is reported by Toda Palavra, a partner of the TV BRICS.

The initiative is expected to save R$87.5 million (US$16,68 million) over five years, as well as prevent the emission of 74,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere.

Rio de Janeiro's Rio de Energia Verde, a project to purchase clean energy for Rio de Janeiro's public institutions, was launched in 2022. The first step in its implementation was a tender to supply electricity to the Administrative Centre of Sao Sebastiao (CASS), the headquarters of the City Hall.

After the first positive results in 2023, city authorities have continued to expand the programme to include new facilities.

“We are already working to ensure that the entire network of municipal buildings uses clean and renewable energy,” emphasised Roberta Guimaraes, Undersecretary of the Ministry of People and Shared Governance. She noted that another 70 schools will soon be provided with clean energy.
