India becomes world’s third-largest solar energy producer

By 2031, the country plans to produce 5 million tons per year

India has emerged as the world’s third-largest solar energy producer, with an installed capacity of approximately 125 gigawatts (GW), according to Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi. This is reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

Pralhad Joshi added that the new energy scheme is expanding transformation across India’s agricultural regions. Its three components target 10 GW of small solar plants, 1.4 million off-grid solar pumps, and 3.5 million grid-connected agricultural pumps, ensuring clean energy access to even the most remote areas.

Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, noted that India now ranks third globally in total renewable energy installations and fourth in wind energy. The country has also become the second-largest manufacturer of solar modules after China, while advancing rapidly in green hydrogen production, aiming for 5 million tonnes annually by 2031 as part of its energy security strategy.
