Iran has secured fourth place globally for the number of elements inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as reported by Nour News, a TV BRICS partner.

According to the latest UNESCO data, Iran has 27 registered elements, placing it behind China (45).

Unlike monuments or archaeological sites, intangible cultural heritage encompasses living traditions that are passed down through generations. These include performing arts, rituals, festive events, craftsmanship, oral traditions, traditional knowledge and social practices that preserve cultural identity and strengthen community ties.

Iran's UNESCO-recognised heritage reflects the country's rich civilisational legacy and ethnic diversity. Among its most prominent registered elements are Turkmen embroidery, the art of illumination (Tazhib), Persian miniature painting, the traditional equestrian sport of Chogan, the Mashhad-e Ardahal carpet-washing ceremony, Naqqali (traditional epic storytelling), the knowledge of building and sailing traditional Lenj boats, and the Radif of Iranian classical music.

According to the source, the international recognition of these traditions is expected to support cultural preservation, promote greater global awareness of Iran's historical heritage, encourage cultural tourism and strengthen efforts to pass traditional knowledge and artistic skills on to future generations.

Cultural experts also note that Iran's extensive regional diversity offers significant potential for additional UNESCO nominations in the coming years, which could further strengthen the country's standing in the global cultural heritage landscape.
