India launches upgraded passport services and new e-Passport to boost global travel

Major digital overhaul aims to streamline applications and strengthen protection of personal data

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has rolled out an expanded suite of modernised passport services, introducing the upgraded global passport programme and a new generation of e-passports for citizens in India and overseas. This is reported by News9, a partner of TV BRICS.

The nationwide launch of the new passport brought a fully integrated digital system to all passport offices. The upgraded platform offers a unified network for faster processing, greater transparency, and improved service delivery across the passport ecosystem.

The global phase followed on 28 October 2025, extending the enhanced services to Indian Embassies and Consulates worldwide. The international rollout ensures that Indians living and working abroad gain equal access to the upgraded system.

Designed with a strong focus on user convenience, the revamped platform introduces real-time assistance through AI-driven chat and voice tools, simplified online applications, auto-filled digital forms, and streamlined electronic payment options. These features aim to reduce waiting times and make passport applications more accessible to citizens.

A key highlight of the reform is the introduction of India’s new e-Passport. The advanced chip-based technology is expected to accelerate identity verification at borders. Traditional passports will remain valid until their date of expiry.

According to the Ministry, the upgraded programmes reflect the Government’s commitment to adopting advanced digital solutions that simplify essential services and enhance the overall travel experience for Indian citizens.
