The country's electricity output grew in the first five months of 2026, supported by rising renewable energy capacity

Tunisia's electricity production reached 7,506 GWh by the end of May 2026, marking a 6 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, according to the National Observatory of Energy and Mines. This was reported by Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP), a partner of TV BRICS.
Electricity production for the domestic market rose by 4 per cent, while imports accounted for 9 per cent of national demand. The majority of the country's electricity was generated by the public power sector, which accounted for 91 per cent of national production.
Renewable energy continued to strengthen its role in Tunisia's power sector, representing 9 per cent of national electricity production. By the end of May, installed rooftop solar photovoltaic capacity in the residential sector had reached approximately 485 MW, while a further 130 MW had been deployed across medium- and high-voltage networks serving the industrial, agricultural and services sectors.
Peak electricity demand stood at 3,182 MW by the end of May. Industrial users continued to account for the largest share of consumption, representing 60 per cent of demand from high- and medium-voltage customers.
Moreover, the demand in electricity use across economic sectors increased in the paper and publishing industry by 7 per cent, while electricity consumption for agricultural pumping rose by 6 per cent, reflecting continued activity in key productive sectors.
