Indian researchers unveil autonomous AI system capable of running scientific experiments

New AI laboratory assistant designs, executes and analyses experiments without human intervention, marking a shift in research automation

Researchers in India have developed an advanced artificial intelligence laboratory assistant capable of independently designing scientific experiments, operating complex laboratory equipment and analysing results without human involvement. This is reported by IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

The system, named Artificial Intelligence Lab Assistant, was created by scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in collaboration with international academic partners. It represents a significant step forward in the application of AI to hands-on scientific research.

According to the research team, the assistant can autonomously operate an atomic force microscope, make real-time experimental decisions and process data end to end. Tasks that previously required an entire day of manual work can now be completed within 7 to 10 minutes, significantly accelerating experimental cycles and improving laboratory efficiency.

Unlike earlier AI tools largely limited to data analysis, text generation or theoretical modelling, the assistant functions directly inside a physical laboratory environment. It conducts experiments from initial design to final interpretation, replicating the workflow of a trained scientist.

Researchers involved in the project noted that optimising microscope parameters for high-resolution and low-noise imaging, a process that traditionally demands years of experience and extensive trial and error, can now be carried out rapidly and autonomously by the AI system.

Experts say the development signals a paradigm shift in experimental science, as artificial intelligence moves beyond assisting researchers to actively performing scientific discovery. The breakthrough is closely aligned with India’s national strategy to integrate AI into scientific research and innovation.

Scientists involved in the project believe autonomous laboratory systems like Artificial Intelligence Lab Assistant could transform research productivity, reduce human workload in repetitive tasks and enable faster breakthroughs in materials science, nanotechnology and related fields.

Across the BRICS space, governments and research institutions are prioritising applied AI systems that can operate autonomously, integrate vast data streams and accelerate results in areas ranging from healthcare and materials science to climate research and biodiversity protection.


A notable example comes from China, where authorities have built an integrated, intelligent biodiversity monitoring network that combines satellite observation, drones, ground sensors, mobile laboratories and AI-driven data platforms. The system enables real-time, multi-scale monitoring of ecosystems, replacing labour-intensive manual surveys with automated, high-precision analysis. By integrating space-, air- and ground-based data, Chinese researchers can track species distribution, assess habitat connectivity and monitor ecosystem health across vast territories.


A further illustration of this trend can be seen in Iran, which has advanced the use of artificial intelligence in space-based research and Earth observation. In late December, the country prepared to launch a new satellite equipped with high-resolution imaging systems enhanced by AI algorithms, enabling image clarity to be significantly improved after data capture. Another example comes from Vietnam, where artificial intelligence is increasingly positioned at the centre of smart city development and urban governance. At a regional smart city summit held in Hanoi, policymakers and experts highlighted how AI is being integrated into transport management, environmental monitoring, energy optimisation and digital public services. Together, these advances underline a growing emphasis on AI as a strategic tool for scientific innovation, sustainability and evidence-based policymaking within the Global South.
