Indian railways launches AI-powered linen Inspection pilot to improve passenger comfort

Indian Railways has launched a pilot programme using artificial intelligence to automate the inspection of freshly laundered linen, marking another step in the modernisation of passenger services and quality assurance across the national rail network, as reported by IANS, a TV BRICS partner.

The initiative is being tested at selected railway laundry facilities, where AI-powered imaging systems are being used to identify stains and assess the cleanliness of bed linen before it is returned to passenger coaches. The technology is expected to improve inspection accuracy while supporting consistent hygiene standards.

The Ministry of Railways said the pilot forms part of wider efforts to enhance the travel experience for passengers, particularly those travelling in air-conditioned classes, where fresh linen is provided on every journey.

Railway authorities noted that the measure has received positive feedback from travellers and forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen onboard service quality.

Alongside the AI inspection pilot, mechanised laundries continue to use specialised equipment to verify cleaning performance, while surveillance systems monitor operational processes to support quality management.

The railway network is also expanding the deployment of CCTV systems at stations, onboard passenger coaches and other railway facilities as part of ongoing efforts to improve passenger safety and operational security.

Thousands of railway stations and passenger coaches are already equipped with CCTV surveillance, with further installations planned as Indian Railways continues its digital transformation programme aimed at improving efficiency, safety and customer experience.
