Indonesia adopts AI-powered ultrasound to tackle breast cancer

Indonesia’s Ministry of Health has launched a national effort to deploy artificial intelligence (AI)-powered ultrasound devices, aiming to improve the early detection of breast cancer and reduce maternal and infant mortality across the country. This is reported by ANTARA.

According to the Mynistry, the move forms part of the government’s broader free health checks initiative and reflects a growing emphasis on digital transformation in healthcare.

Rizka Andalusia, Director General of Pharmacy and Medical Devices at the Ministry of Health, stated that AI-guided screening technologies are set to significantly increase diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.

Ultrasound machines enhanced with AI capabilities are expected to deliver more precise diagnostic results compared to conventional manual techniques. These tools will support early intervention, particularly in communities with limited access to specialised care, and will help alleviate pressure on the country’s limited number of trained healthcare professionals.

The Director General stressed that wider access to ultrasound screening is essential, particularly in underserved regions. She also highlighted the need for greater collaboration among stakeholders, including academic institutions, radiology experts, industry leaders, and government bodies, to develop innovative and cost-effective screening solutions.
