Indonesia positions gaming and esports as key engines of creative economy growth
Government-backed initiatives aim to expand digital talent, create jobs and strengthen the country's global competitiveness
Indonesia is increasingly recognising gaming and esports as strategic sectors capable of accelerating growth in the creative economy, creating new employment opportunities and supporting the development of a highly skilled digital workforce, as reported by ANTARA.
Speaking at a national esports gathering in Jakarta, Creative Economy Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya said the gaming sector has evolved far beyond entertainment and is emerging as an important contributor to economic development and innovation.
According to the minister, the government's approach focuses on strengthening the entire gaming and esports ecosystem, including players, commentators, community organisations, event organisers, content creators and a growing range of digital professions linked to the sector.
He noted that changing workforce trends, particularly among younger generations, are creating favourable conditions for the expansion of creative industries. A growing number of young people are seeking careers aligned with their interests and digital skills, opening new opportunities for the gaming and esports ecosystem.
Experts also pointed to the increasing economic significance of esports, which is generating opportunities across a wide range of sectors, including content production, event management, digital services, technology development and creative entrepreneurship.
Observers note that the sector's continued expansion could play an important role in strengthening Indonesia's creative economy, supporting job creation and enhancing the country's standing as a growing hub for digital talent and innovation in Southeast Asia.
