Indonesia and China open joint video and animation Research and Development Centre in Shanghai
Authorities view these sectors as strategic for cultural and creative industries
An Indonesia–China joint research and development centre for video and animation has opened in Shanghai, as reported by ANTARA.
Indonesia aims to move from the role of a consumer to that of a producer, creator and exporter of digital cultural intellectual property. As noted by Indonesia’s Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, this requires strengthening the ecosystem, including improvements in financing, research, technology, production management, workforce quality, marketing, distribution, and intellectual property protection.
In the first quarter of 2026, 870 million mobile game downloads were recorded in Indonesia. Indonesian users account for 43 per cent of all gamers in Southeast Asia. The domestic market volume has reached US$2.5 billion. At the same time, foreign products continue to dominate the local market.
According to the source, the Indonesia–China centre in Shanghai will develop projects reflecting both Indonesian and Chinese cultures. It is expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation and promote Indonesian creative works in China and on the global market as part of cultural diplomacy efforts. Training programmes are also planned for professionals in the gaming and animation sectors.
The report notes that the global gaming market is projected to exceed US$275 billion in 2026. Growth is expected to be driven primarily by mobile gaming, esports, cloud gaming services and digital distribution.
