Iran’s greenhouse farming grows 161% in decade
Iran’s total arable land has expanded by 5 per cent, now covering 15 million hectares
Iran’s greenhouse farming sector has experienced a remarkable 161 per cent expansion over the past decade, reflecting the country’s strategic push towards agricultural sustainability and food security. This is reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
The latest census data reveals that the number of greenhouse farming operations has surged to over 36,000 producers. Additionally, Iran’s total arable land has expanded by 5 per cent, now covering 15 million hectares. Of this, wheat remains the dominant crop with 8.4 million hectares under cultivation, followed by barley at 1.6 million hectares and rice at 491,000 hectares.
Orchard farming has also seen a 9 per cent increase, now spanning two million hectares, though there has been a slight reduction in total orchard area compared to 2014.
Currently, Iran has four million agricultural operators, with 11 per cent based in urban areas.
