President Maduro confirms Venezuela's interest in joining BRICS
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that his country hopes to join BRICS, an economic cooperation group that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
"BRICS is the driving force behind the emergence of a multipolar world, and now that the bloc is considering expanding to allow new countries to participate, Venezuela expresses its intention to join," he said. The country has submitted a formal application to join the bloc.
The Bolivarian leader hopes that the proposal will be favourably received by the BRICS countries and Venezuela will enter the group's dynamics as soon as possible.
Representatives of the BRICS states are expected to consider the official membership applications of the various countries at the group's summit to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 22 August, as reported by teleSUR, a partner of TV BRICS.
Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Argentina, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Turkey and Egypt have also expressed interest in joining the association.
