South Africa unveils digital tool for environmental assessment of projects
The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment of South Africa Dion George has announced the launch of a national web-based environmental screening tool, officially operating under 16 Regulation of the NEMA EIA Regulations of 2014. This is reported by the official website of the South African Government.
“This instrument is a game-changer for South Africa,” the minister said.
He added that the implementation of the mechanism will enable faster implementation of projects that create jobs and stimulate growth.
The tool allows the environmental sensitivity of sites to be determined in advance and categorises areas by level of impact, from low to very high. Based on the data obtained, project boundaries can be adapted, avoiding risks to sensitive areas, and appropriate protocols can be used.
The system is already being actively used in the renewable energy sector: more than 3,000 applications have been processed, and the identification of low sensitivity areas has helped to reduce project preparation times.
The introduction of the platform is expected to accelerate the launch of infrastructure and energy projects, create jobs and stimulate economic activity, especially in rural and post-industrial regions.
