Zimbabwe records growth in domestic tourism as traveller numbers increase

Rising numbers of local and international visitors are strengthening Zimbabwe’s tourism sector and supporting economic development

Zimbabwe is placing domestic tourism at the centre of its long-term development strategy, as growing participation by local travellers continues to support expansion across the sector. Domestic tourism recorded notable growth during the first quarter of 2026. Local tourism trips increased to an estimated 2.62 million from 1.94 million in the corresponding period a year earlier. For the full year, domestic travel is expected to rise to 15.7 million trips, compared with 15.5 million previously, highlighting growing interest in Zimbabwe’s destinations.

Tourism receipts are projected to reach US$1.36 billion in 2026, up from US$1.3 billion recorded in the previous year, reports The Herald, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to authority, strengthening local tourism remains a strategic priority. It was noted that increased local travel supports economic activity across the tourism value chain and encourages broader participation in the tourism economy.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Takaruza Munyanyiwa said domestic tourism has the potential to generate benefits across multiple sectors of the economy. Increased travel activity supports hospitality, transport, retail and creative industries, contributing to employment creation and broader economic growth.

Visitor numbers continued to rise during the first quarter of 2026. International tourist arrivals increased by 11 per cent to 384,515 from 347,555 in the corresponding period of 2025, while arrivals from African markets grew by 9 per cent to 287,062 visitors.
