Southeast of Brazil discovers new species of orchid

The plant is found only within the region and does not grow naturally in any other place in the world

A new species of orchid, named Habenaria adamantina, has been discovered in Grao Mogol State Park in the north of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. The name refers to the diamonds that played an important role in the history of the municipality of Gran Mogol and to the delicate sheen of the plant’s small flowers. This was reported on the website of the state’s public forestry institute.

The plant grows in rocky areas – some of the country’s most biodiverse yet most vulnerable natural zones.

The orchid grows in sandy and moist soils, in sunny areas near small watercourses. As noted by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS, researchers have managed to identify only 12 specimens across an area of approximately 16.9 square kilometres. According to the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the new orchid may be classified as endangered.

However, measures to protect the orchids are being implemented in the park: scientific work is carried out only with the permission of the management authorities, soil conditions are monitored, and public use of the area is controlled.

Discoveries have been made in other BRICS countries and their partners, which also expand knowledge of biodiversity and contribute to the development of scientific research.

A team of researchers has carried out many years of work in the mountainous regions of south-central Chile, primarily in the O’Higgins region. Scientists have discovered specimens of four plants that do not match previously recorded species, reports El Maipo, a partner of TV BRICS. The newly discovered species belong to the genera Miersia and Gilliesia and are flowering herbaceous bulbous perennials of the Amaryllidaceae family.

Researchers from Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) have identified a new species of land snail – Chamalycaeus dayangmerindu. The species’ range is limited to the Padang-Bindu karst region in South Sumatra province; it is found nowhere else, notes ANTARA. The species requires special attention, as its restricted habitat makes it vulnerable to environmental changes.

Russian zoologists have discovered a new species of marine gastropod and named it Chudo humanistica ("The Humanistic Wonder"), according to the website of Lomonosov Moscow State University. The creature was discovered at a depth of 2,800 metres off the coast of Antarctica. The find proved so unique that it necessitated the creation of a whole series of new taxonomic groups (groups of organisms based on common characteristics): the superfamily Chudoidea, the family Chudidae and the genus Chudo ("Miracle"). The Latin name of the species has become a symbol of humanistic hope.
