Zimbabwe commissions waste-to-energy plant to transform Harare’s waste into power

The plant aims to reduce environmental impact and improve urban sanitation

The authorities in Zimbabwe have officially commissioned a sorting plant and refuse collection equipment at the Pomona waste-to-energy facility, located in the country's capital.

The new plant's advanced sorting technology is designed to increase recycling rates by diverting valuable materials from landfill and preparing waste for energy recovery. This is reported by The Herald, a partner of TV BRICS.

The project transforms the former Pomona dumpsite into a state-of-the-art waste-to-energy facility, which is expected to generate up to 22 megawatts of electricity. The initiative has garnered international interest, with support and investment offers from companies in several countries, according to the source.

It is expected that this significant power contribution will support Zimbabwe’s national grid while addressing Harare’s longstanding issues with waste disposal. By converting waste into energy, the plant aims to reduce environmental impact and improve urban sanitation.
