Zimbabwe strengthens structured sesame marketing as farmers earn over US$1 million

A regulated trading framework is supporting the sesame sector's growth and improving transparency in agricultural marketing

Sesame farmers in Zimbabwe have generated more than US$1 million from sales as marketing of the current season’s harvest gains momentum under a structured trading system. According to the Agricultural Marketing Authority (AMA), farmers have sold 1.4 million kilogrammes of sesame, valued at approximately US$1.2 million, reflecting steady activity in the sector, reports The Herald, a partner of TV BRICS.

To support orderly marketing, the authority has introduced a regulatory circular governing sesame production and trade, requiring contractors, traders, processors and growers to operate under formal agreements and registration systems.

Under the framework, all sesame contractors are required to sign memoranda of agreement with AMA at the start of each season and register farmers through a centralised system. Contractors must also submit valid contracts outlining hectares and input distribution, ensuring compliance with established timelines and procedures.

The authority noted that enforcement measures are being implemented in collaboration with security agencies and local councils to support fair market participation.

Recent market activity indicates steady uptake of sesame, with multiple bulk purchases recorded as part of the regulated trading system. Export performance and rising international demand, driven by food, cosmetic and plant-based industries, continue to support interest in the crop. Officials indicated that Zimbabwe’s sesame production has expanded markedly in recent years, supported by increased cultivation and stronger participation in global markets.
