Triumph of male dance: legendary ballet Spartacus at Bolshoi Theatre

This production, which has become the Bolshoi Theatre’s signature piece, was staged by choreographer Yuri Grigorovich in 1968. To this day, dancers consider the roles in this ballet to be among the most challenging for a dancer.

How has Spartacus influenced the development of world art? What makes the role of the legendary ancient hero so challenging, according to its performer Aleksey Putintsev? What positive qualities does Aleksander Vetrov, who danced this role masterfully in the 1980s, see in the antagonist Crassus? Why has Bolshoi principal dancer Vladislav Lantratov been preparing for Spartacus for several days?

Details in our report.
