Africa sets new standards for higher education in traditional Chinese medicine

The Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association of Africa has officially introduced the African Standards for Traditional Chinese Medicine Higher Education and the African Standards for Acupuncture Higher Education, reports Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

At the launch in Johannesburg, Hu Zijing, project lead and head of the African Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, highlighted that the standards were developed through multiple review cycles, cross-regional collaboration, and practical input from experts in China, South Africa, Thailand, the Philippines, and Malaysia.

The framework covers curriculum design, teaching content, instructional methods, and assessment mechanisms, spanning foundational TCM theory, diagnostics, herbal formulas, acupuncture, and clinical practice.

The Standards transition TCM education from an experience-based approach to a structured, replicable system.

The University of Johannesburg has already applied the Standards across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
