Egypt transforms leather industry with innovative development plan

Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has reaffirmed the transformative impact of Egypt's leather industry. The initiative, spearheaded under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi ’s directives, signifies a new move towards modernising and adding value to the sector, with substantial economic benefits anticipated, as reported by Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.

Robbiki Leather City, a national leather industry development project, sprawling across 500 feddans, is being executed in three phases. The initial phase involved relocating over 195 tanneries to the new site, with contracts already issued to regularise the status of the relocated facilities.

Madbouly outlined the second phase’s ambition to elevate the leather industry by introducing factories for adhesives, gelatin, and other associated products, enabling the transformation of raw leather into finished goods. This approach is set to boost export potential by integrating production processes and creating a value chain.

The final phase focuses on manufacturing finished leather products, including garments, shoes, and accessories, revitalising industries that once flourished in Egypt. Leveraging global expertise, this stage aims to regain competitive advantage and drive export growth.

Currently, the city houses 100 operational factories, with plans to hand over additional facilities to investors shortly. This expansion is expected to elevate Egypt’s annual export capacity in leather goods to over US$1 billion.
