Ethiopia generates almost 100% of its electricity from renewable sources

Ethiopia advances climate resilience and green industrialisation with water management initiatives

Ethiopia is making strides in climate resilience and sustainable development through renewable energy expansion, water conservation initiatives, and green infrastructure projects, according to Ethiopian Minister of Planning and Development Fitsum Assefa Adela.

The minister highlighted that nearly 100 per cent of Ethiopia’s electricity comes from renewable sources, with hydroelectric power playing a key role. Fitsum Assefa underscored government projects related to universal electrification, particularly in rural areas, supported by investments in solar and wind energy, as well as innovative solutions like solar-powered irrigation systems. She noted progress in sustainable water management, citing conservation projects and initiatives aimed at protecting major river basins, including the Nile.

Ethiopia is also prioritising climate-smart infrastructure, with urban development projects incorporating green spaces and sustainable transport solutions, as reported by Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a partner of TV BRICS.

According to the source, the government’s transition towards electric mobility, including incentives for electric vehicle imports, positions Ethiopia as a pioneer in the region.

“Our development plan is fully aligned with the goal of building climate resilience while pursuing sustainable economic growth. We are proving that green growth and development can go hand in hand,” the minister said.

In addition, Ethiopia is advancing carbon trading frameworks to tap into global markets, leveraging initiatives like the Green Legacy Initiative, which has resulted in the planting of billions of trees.
