Major water conservation initiative to be launched in Ethiopia

Authorities plan to increase agricultural productivity in this way

The leadership of Ethiopia's Benishangul-Gumuz region has finalised preparations for the launch of a large-scale initiative to conserve soil and water resources. The project, which will cover 53 thousand hectares of land, will involve 247,000 people. This is announced by Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a partner of TV BRICS.

The initiative is expected to help combat land degradation and increase agricultural productivity. It will address key issues in the region, among them soil erosion and water scarcity.

"This is not just about preserving land," Abdulkarim Musa, Deputy Head of the Region Agriculture Bureau’s Natural Resources Division Sector stated, "it’s about empowering our farmers and ensuring the long-term sustainability of our resources."

Authorities in the region have called on local residents to actively participate in the project. Intensive training programmes for industry specialists have also been organised for its successful implementation. It is noted that the trainings will help farmers learn strategies for effective conservation of natural resources.
