Ethiopia installs Global Navigation Satellite System and Magnetometer

This facility is set to make Ethiopia a key part of the global magnetometer network

The Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI), in partnership with the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), has successfully installed a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and a Magnetometer in Ethiopia. This development was announced by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Innovation and Technology, as reports Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC), a partner of TV BRICS.

The newly commissioned GNSS receiving station is designed to capture data from global satellite positioning systems, including GPS and other Global Navigation Satellite Systems, enhancing the country’s ability to receive real-time positioning data.

In its turn, a magnetometer measures variations in the Earth's magnetic field. This installation is set to make Ethiopia a key part of the global magnetometer network, contributing valuable data to the scientific community.

The GNSS and magnetometer data will also play a crucial role in the Space Weather Monitoring Centre currently being developed by the institute. This centre aims to provide critical insights into space weather events and assess their potential impact on Earth, helping mitigate associated risks.

The collaboration between Ethiopia and South Africa marks a significant step in advancing space science and research in the region.
