Ethiopia to plant 7.5 billion indigenous seedlings under green legacy initiative in 2025
The detailed mapping will be conducted for 50 per cent of the targeted planting areas to enhance planning and monitoring
Ethiopia is preparing to plant over 7.5 billion seedlings in 2025 as part of its ongoing Green Legacy Initiative, with an emphasis on indigenous tree species to promote sustainable reforestation and environmental restoration efforts. This is reported by ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.
Adefris Worku, Chairman of the Green Legacy Initiative Technical Committee, confirmed that the upcoming planting campaign will prioritise areas that have already undergone soil and water conservation work, as well as degraded landscapes requiring urgent ecological rehabilitation.
He also announced that detailed mapping will be conducted for 50 per cent of the targeted planting areas to enhance planning, monitoring, and long-term success. Preparations are underway to include both fruit and tree seedlings, ensuring biodiversity and the promotion of climate-resilient landscapes.
Adefris highlighted that this year’s campaign will see greater use of technological tools to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the planting process. Unlike previous years, the 2025 initiative will focus particularly on indigenous seedlings, underlining Ethiopia’s commitment to restoring native ecosystems and strengthening local environmental resilience.
Since the launch of the Green Legacy Initiative, Ethiopia has planted over 40 billion seedlings across the country over the past six years.
