Humanoid AI-powered traffic controllers take to roads in China

Automated assistants capable of operating around the clock are designed to ease the workload of police officers

A humanoid AI-powered traffic control robot has begun operating in the city of Wuhu in eastern China, as reported by Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to Jiang Zihao, an officer with the Wuhu traffic police, the robot is capable of performing standard traffic control gestures synchronised with traffic lights and issuing voice warnings to violators. It is equipped with high-resolution cameras and an intelligent voice alert system. To detect violations, the robot uses large-model data processing algorithms, enabling it to autonomously record offences committed by non-motorised vehicles and pedestrians.

The robot is not limited to stationary work: it is mobile and capable of independently moving to designated locations. Its functions also include detecting illegal parking and monitoring traffic conditions in real time. This allows it to operate in all weather conditions and helps reduce the workload on human police officers, especially during peak hours and in adverse weather.

Visually, the robot resembles a person in a police uniform and, as noted in the report, has already become a local attraction.

Robotic law enforcement units, including quadruped robot dogs and wheeled robots, are already being tested in other Chinese cities such as Chengdu and Hangzhou. Their development and deployment form part of a state strategy to apply advanced technologies, including intelligent robots, directly in everyday life.

The company manufacturing the humanoid robot reports that the devices are already being used in more than 100 different scenarios, including reception services, patrol duties and public services.
