Iran and India to boost agricultural trade beyond US$1 billion through new BRICS partnership
Iran and India are preparing to expand their agricultural trade ties beyond the current US$1.0 billion mark, following high-level discussions between the two nations’ agriculture ministers during the BRICS agriculture summit in Brazil. This is reported by Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
Iran’s Minister of Agriculture, Gholamreza Nouri Ghezeljeh, met with his Indian counterpart Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan to review existing agreements and outline new areas of cooperation.
As part of the latest agreements, the two countries will form a joint agricultural cooperation committee within the next three months. This new body will work to enhance exports of agricultural goods.
The decision was formalised during a meeting in New Delhi between Iran’s Deputy Agriculture Minister Mohammad Mehdi Borumandi and Shri Manoj Ahuja, Secretary at India’s Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. Plans are also in place to hold the inaugural meeting of a joint working group on agricultural cooperation in the near future.
In parallel, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture Alireza Mohajer reaffirmed the country’s willingness to strengthen ties with BRICS members in the agricultural sector.
Experts believe that the growing agricultural partnership between Iran and India is expected to contribute not only to mutual economic benefits but also to regional food security and sustainable development, further cementing their positions as key partners within the evolving BRICS group.
