Iranian-Chinese research advances high-efficiency organic solar cell technology

A collaborative research project between Iranian physicist Asghar Asgari and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has made significant strides in the development of high-efficiency organic solar cell technology, as reported by Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

Supported by the Iran National Science Foundation (INSF), the study focused on organic solar cells, a promising form of next-generation energy conversion known for their low-cost materials, lightweight design, mechanical flexibility, and roll-to-roll scalability. 

Asgari, who holds a PhD in Photonics Physics from the University of Tabriz, explained that the project aimed to develop new, low-cost donor and acceptor polymers and to optimise charge separation and transport through morphological and structural design.

In the course of the project, the team successfully improved laboratory-scale power conversion efficiencies to over 13 per cent, and achieved over 8 per cent in commercially scalable cell formats.

Alongside technical breakthroughs, the project also contributed to building laboratory infrastructure, training researchers, and developing prototype devices, laying the groundwork for further optimisation and potential industrial application.
