Iranian researchers develop nano-structured needle coke from oil waste

Iranian researchers are developing a method to produce high-purity, nano-structured needle coke using oil residues and asphaltines, low-cost domestic materials. The project, reported by Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS, aims to reduce imports and establish a sustainable supply chain for graphite electrodes used in steel and aluminium production.

Led by Babak Mokhtari at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, the team is optimising processing and chemical structuring to produce needle coke with ideal physical properties. This material, according to experts, is crucial for nano-structured graphite electrodes, which perform better in high-temperature, energy-intensive industrial processes.

The project offers both economic and environmental benefits. Producing needle coke locally could save millions in foreign currency annually, while using oil residues helps manage industrial waste and reduces environmental impact, the report stressed.

Researchers emphasised that the nano-structured electrodes provide superior conductivity and stability, improving efficiency in metal smelting and refining. Scaling the technology for industrial use could secure a domestic supply, boost advanced materials production, and strengthen Iran’s industrial independence.
