Nigeria strengthens textile industry with 45% production increase
Experts say continued investment and skills development could further strengthen the country's manufacturing sector
Nigeria's textile production has grown by more than 45 per cent, supporting domestic manufacturing. Experts attribute the increase to higher local investment, stronger demand for Nigerian-made products and growing interest in the sector among young entrepreneurs, reports News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), a partner of TV BRICS.
Economic and development expert Umar Salis said the expansion demonstrates the resilience and innovation of Nigerian manufacturers. According to him, the country is steadily increasing the production of garments, including jerseys, trousers, jackets, suits and T-shirts, helping reinforce the national manufacturing base.
Salis noted that the sector's development has created new employment opportunities and contributed to the country's economic growth. He emphasised that further progress could be achieved through the expansion of industrial clusters, improved access to financing, reliable electricity and the adoption of advanced production technologies.
Garment manufacturer Musa Ibrahim said rising consumer confidence in locally produced clothing has encouraged small and medium-sized enterprises to expand operations across Nigeria. He added that increased investment has strengthened activities throughout the textile value chain and boosted the production of high-quality apparel for the domestic market.
Experts agree that sustained investment in Nigeria's textile industry will help expand manufacturing capacity, increase export potential and strengthen the country's position as a leading textile and garment producer in Africa.
