Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Shanghai, where he had travelled to attend the World Conference on Artificial Intelligence
China and Kazakhstan have signed a Programme and Roadmap for trade and economic cooperation for 2027–2030. This was reported on the official website of the President of Kazakhstan.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for improvements to the structure of bilateral trade and advocated for better transport links, including an increase in the number of direct flights and the simplification of international road transport, according to Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS. He noted that China is ready to share technologies with Kazakhstan in the fields of the digital economy and artificial intelligence, thereby facilitating the country’s digital transformation. Xi Jinping proposed expanding cooperation between China and Kazakhstan in the fields of education, science, healthcare, sport and the media, as well as jointly organising a Year of Cultural Exchange between the two countries.
Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that China remains Kazakhstan’s largest trading partner. According to him, Chinese investment in the republic’s economy has reached US$30 billion, whilst the volume of bilateral trade last year amounted to US$49 billion. More than 8,500 companies with Chinese capital are operating in Kazakhstan. Joint projects are being implemented in industry, energy, gas chemistry, mechanical engineering, and agriculture.
Tokayev highlighted the development of people-to-people ties between the two countries. In 2025, more than 1 million Chinese citizens visited Kazakhstan. Cultural centres have opened in the capitals of both countries, and Luban Workshop (international vocational training centres) are already operating in Kazakhstan.
During his visit, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also discussed with the management of a Chinese company the construction of the multi-purpose port of Kuryk in the Mangistau Region. The project envisages the creation of a multimodal port hub with a throughput capacity of up to 15 million tonnes in the first phase of implementation, reports Kazinform, a partner of TV BRICS.
The leaders reaffirmed their readiness to continue coordination within the framework of the United Nations (UN), the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) and the Central Asia–China format.
