Chinese scientists set world record with 28.04% efficient tandem solar cell
Breakthrough perovskite-organic technology combines record energy conversion with high stability, advancing clean energy and space applications
Chinese researchers have developed a new perovskite-organic tandem solar cell that has achieved a steady-state power conversion efficiency of 28.04 per cent, setting a new world record for this class of photovoltaic technology, as reported by Global Times, a TV BRICS partner.
The breakthrough was made by a research team from the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, led by academician Li Yongfang and researcher Meng Lei.
The team attributed the performance improvement to the introduction of a photo-convertible additive molecule, which enhances the interaction between the cell's different layers and improves overall energy conversion.
Perovskite-organic tandem solar cells are designed to overcome the efficiency limitations of conventional single-junction solar cells by using multiple light-absorbing layers, each capturing different wavelengths of sunlight. This architecture enables significantly higher electricity generation from the same amount of solar radiation.
In addition to achieving record efficiency, the new solar cell demonstrated strong operational durability. During laboratory testing, it retained 90 per cent of its initial efficiency after 625 hours of continuous illumination, highlighting its potential for long-term practical use.
Researchers said the technology combines several key advantages, including lightweight construction, mechanical flexibility and high specific power, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
Beyond supporting the global transition to low-carbon energy, the new solar cells could be integrated into buildings, wearable electronics, satellites and other aerospace systems. Scientists also believe the technology could play an important role in providing reliable energy for future deep-space exploration missions, where lightweight and highly efficient power sources are essential.
The achievement further strengthens China's position in advanced renewable energy research and demonstrates continued progress in developing high-performance photovoltaic technologies for both terrestrial and space-based applications.
