Over 95% of disabled people in China is covered by basic health insurance

More than 95 per cent of people with disabilities in China are enrolled in the country’s basic medical insurance scheme, while over 90 per cent are covered by the basic old-age insurance programme for both urban and rural residents. The figures were reported by Xinhua News Agency, a TV BRICS partner, citing official data from the Chinese government.

Over the past five years, China has expanded its social security provisions for people with disabilities, introducing a range of subsidies and allowances to ensure comprehensive coverage. 

As of June 2025, living allowances for those facing financial hardship had reached 11.88 million recipients, while nursing subsidies for the severely disabled had supported 16.4 million individuals. Furthermore, 10.5 million people with disabilities are now part of the national subsistence allowance system.

A nationwide initiative for barrier-free home renovations exceeded expectations, according to the report, benefiting 1.28 million households with disabled members, well above the initial target of 1.1 million.
