Cuba and Vietnam increase economic cooperation through investments in agriculture and energy
The countries are promoting strategic investments in the Mariel Special Development Zone and joint rice production projects
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel received Vietnam’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Le Hoai Trung, at a meeting in which the parties highlighted the historic ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, according to teleSUR, a partner of TV BRICS.
During the visit, the Vietnamese representative toured the Mariel Special Development Zone (ZEDM), where he assessed the progress of Vietnamese businesses in sectors such as industry, agri-food production, renewable energy, trade, and finance.
The Director General of the Mariel Special Development Zone (ZEDM), Ana Teresa Igarza Martinez, stated that Vietnam is the country with the second-largest business presence in the zone, with projects aimed at strengthening Cuba’s economic development.
Le Hoai Trung also visited the province of Pinar del Rio to see the progress of the joint rice production project. By 2026, the initiative had expanded to more than 900 hectares under cultivation, with positive results, while Cuban authorities highlighted the potential for further increasing production.
In Havana, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla emphasised that Vietnam has established itself as the leading investor among Asian and Oceanian countries in Cuba. He also highlighted cooperation in strategic sectors such as agriculture, the production of essential goods and renewable energy.
The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in areas related to food security, energy and sustainable development.
