Saudi Arabia aims for self-sufficiency level of 58% in grape production
The kingdom intends to increase production of local fruit and improve quality and safety standards
According to Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, the country produces more than 110,500 metric tonnes of grapes annually, grown on an area of more than 4,720 hectares. This is reported by Arab News.
The Tabuk region leads in grape production, producing about 46,939 metric tonnes annually.
The ministry notes that grapes are a profitable and unpretentious crop that can be grown on various soils with minimal water consumption. In addition, grapes are rich in nutrients and have many health benefits.
The grape harvest season in Saudi Arabia runs from June to September. As part of its campaign to promote local fruit, the Ministry aims to encourage increased consumption of grapes, improve the quality of grape production, and provide farmers with higher profits.
Overall, the ministry aims to increase local fruit production, improve quality and safety standards, and improve marketing strategies to make growing fruit in Saudi Arabia more profitable for local farmers.
