Vietnam uses AI to transform detection of non-communicable diseases

The health sector is shifting from treatment to prevention, using artificial intelligence to improve screening and patient care

Vietnam is increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate screening and early detection of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), supporting a broader transition in healthcare from treatment to prevention, as reported by Vietnam News Agency (VNA), a partner of TV BRICS.

The government has implemented nationwide initiatives to promote early detection and public awareness. More than 300 outpatient clinics for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma have been established, while nearly 3,000 commune health stations manage prevention and treatment for close to 700,000 patients.

Digital transformation is central to the sector’s next phase. Priority areas include expanding screening programmes, creating electronic health records, and enhancing data connectivity across healthcare levels. According to the source, these efforts are laying the foundation for AI applications in disease forecasting, patient management, and clinical decision support.

Experts emphasised the role of big data and AI as strategic pillars. The hospital has developed three AI models for lung cancer diagnosis, analysing computed tomography (CT) scans, bronchoscopy imaging, and pathological slides. Created in collaboration with domestic scientists under a State-level research project, the models have been highly rated by the national science and technology council and are ready for broader deployment.

Early results indicate that AI can enhance diagnostic accuracy. By integrating seamlessly into clinical workflows, AI supports timely decisions, reduces missed lesions, and strengthens preventive strategies. With standardised and interconnected medical data systems, broader AI adoption is expected to help Vietnam’s healthcare system shift from reactive treatment to proactive, preventive care, improving service quality and patient outcomes.
