Opportunities for BRICS countries to cooperate in fashion industry

Each BRICS country brings a rich and distinct cultural legacy to the global fashion scene. From Brazil’s vibrant streetwear and carnival-inspired designs to Russia’s motifs and winter luxury to India’s centuries-old textile traditions, China’s fusion of ancient silk artistry with futuristic minimalism, and South Africa’s bold prints and expressions. Imagine the creative explosion that could occur when these traditions begin to blend and inspire across borders.

In an increasingly interconnected world, fashion has emerged as more than just a form of self-expression; it is a powerful cultural bridge. For the BRICS nations, the fashion industry presents a unique opportunity to celebrate heritage, foster creativity, and deepen cooperation through cultural exchange.

This kind of exchange is already beginning to take shape. Russian and Brazilian designers showcasing at Soweto Fashion Week in South Africa. The BRICS+ Fashion Summit in Moscow is bringing together Chinese, Indian, South African, Brazilian, and other countries brands.  But these instances are no longer scattered; what is happening now is intention, structure, and a shared vision.

The establishment of the BRICS International Fashion Federation in 2023 during the BRICS+ fashion summit is meant to operate as a cultural exchange platform that could help bring these countries together, promoting cross-country collaborative collections and rotating fashion festivals.

Cultural exchange programmes could allow young Russian designers to immerse themselves in the different historical South African print aesthetics and historical worlds.

Beyond the runway, this exchange has the potential to deepen mutual understanding between peoples. Fashion is a living archive of identity. When designers interpret another country’s symbols with respect and curiosity, they don’t just create beautiful garments; they begin conversations that cross histories.

For the BRICS nations, fashion isn’t just an economic opportunity; it is a chance to redefine what global collaboration looks like: creative, inclusive, and rooted in cultural pride. The next wave of fashion will emerge from an emerging capital of global tapestry woven between Soweto, Johannesburg, Sao Paulo, Mumbai, Moscow, and Beijing.

In a world searching for fresh voices and deeper connections, the BRICS fashion story is just beginning, and it is dressed in the colours of collaboration.
