Belarus expands its global food security role through agricultural cooperation and FAO partnership
Belarus strengthens its contribution to global food security through advanced agricultural production, technology transfer and international cooperation
Belarus is strengthening its role in global food security through agricultural innovation, international cooperation, and knowledge sharing, according to statements made during a meeting between President Aleksander Lukashenko and the Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Qu Dongyu, on 1 June, reports BelTA, a partner of TV BRICS.
The discussions focused on Belarus’s contribution to food production, agricultural technology, and support for countries seeking to improve domestic farming capacity amid growing global concerns over food security and sustainable agricultural development.
Lukashenko emphasised that Belarus continues to play an important role in supplying food products and agricultural expertise to international markets. He noted that the country has developed a highly advanced agricultural sector supported by domestic production of farming machinery and modern cultivation technologies.
According to the Belarusian leader, the country’s approach extends beyond food exports. Belarus is increasingly engaged in transferring agricultural knowledge and technologies to partner nations, helping them strengthen local food production systems and improve long-term food resilience.
"We work with countries that require agricultural technologies and expertise. Alongside food supplies, we support efforts to develop local agricultural production, train specialists and improve food security," he said.
Particular attention has been given to cooperation with developing nations, including countries in Africa, where Belarusian agricultural training programmes and technology-sharing initiatives have contributed to expanding local production capacity.
The partnership has also delivered tangible development results. Since joining FAO, Belarus has implemented bilateral technical cooperation projects valued at approximately US$2 million, alongside a number of regional initiatives supported by the organisation.
At present, four FAO projects worth US$470,000 are being implemented in Belarus, focusing on agricultural development, food systems and sectoral capacity building.
Looking ahead, additional cooperation is expected to continue. Potential FAO-supported projects for Belarus through 2030 could receive funding of up to US$1 million, further strengthening collaboration in areas linked to sustainable agriculture, food security and rural development.
