India records highest-ever May vehicle sales as consumer demand drives market expansion
Passenger vehicles lead growth while demand for alternative-fuel transport continues to accelerate across urban and rural regions
India’s automotive market achieved its strongest May performance on record, with retail vehicle sales surpassing 2.53 million units, reports IANS, a TV BRICS partner.
The latest figures show broad-based growth across multiple vehicle segments, with passenger vehicles emerging as the strongest performer. Passenger vehicle sales recorded particularly robust growth, exceeding 400,000 units during the month. Analysts attribute the increase to strong demand for personal mobility, improved product availability and sustained consumer interest across a range of vehicle categories.
Rural regions played an increasingly important role in market expansion, outpacing urban growth in several segments. Industry observers note that rising incomes, infrastructure improvements and greater access to financing continue to support vehicle ownership outside major metropolitan areas.
Two-wheeler sales also maintained positive momentum, remaining the largest contributor to overall market volumes. Demand was supported by daily mobility needs and increasing adoption in smaller cities and rural communities.
A notable trend during the month was the continued shift towards alternative-fuel and energy-efficient vehicles. Consumers showed growing interest in electric mobility and other low-emission technologies, driven by concerns over fuel costs, environmental awareness and long-term operating efficiency.
Commercial vehicle sales also registered growth, signalling healthy economic activity and rising demand for freight and logistics services. Stronger performance in non-metropolitan areas suggests that economic expansion is becoming more geographically diverse, supported by growing trade and infrastructure development.
